Fire
The expanding role of a fire fighter now encompasses USAR, RTCs, wildland and first response. Kit is evolving to cope with these added responsibilities, but the traditional firefighters PPE is their turnout gear which needs to offer a high level of thermal protection whilst being comfortable to wear. Heat stress is an important factor and consideration should be given to the trade off between thermal protection and comfort and the workload put on the body of wearing a heavy piece of kit.
Outershell The Outershell of turnout gear offers the first line of defence against heat and flame and is also required to offer protection against the ingress of liquid chemicals. Hainsworths can supply the following TI-technology™ fabrics, with our unique Repel+ finish, to meet and beat the requirements laid down in EN469:
- Ref: 1241 Nomex® with TI-technology™- 170 gsm. The lightest outershell on the market today. This very low weight is achieved by following the principle of Intelligent Thermal Protection
- Ref: 1220 Nomex® with TI-technology™- 220 gsm. This was the first TI-technology™ fabric produced and was originally developed for Lion Apparel and Bristol Uniforms for their Care garments where the customer required a product that was guaranteed to look good and wear extremely well.
- Ref: 1250 Nomex® with TI-technology™- 270 gsm. This fabric provides the ultimate in thermal protection, increasing breathability whilst reducing the weight and bulk of the garment as a whole, without sacrificing the thermal protection.

Lining
The lining has to be able to wick moisture away from the skin and be comfortable to wear. Hainsworths can supply linings manufactured from Nomex® Comfort and Nomex®/FR Viscose as single layer fabrics or quilted to a Nomex® felt.
Hainsworths are also able to undertake design and development work to find bespoke solutions as required. We have sample weaving facilities and can produce short runs for trials and testing.
Nomex® Kevlar® and Thermo-Man™ are registered trade marks of DuPont
